Day 4 – FLORENCE-ROMEFlorence is the capital of the Tuscany region of Italy.  One of the most recognizable sites of Florence is the Duomo Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore, which began construction in the year 1296.  If you’re up for the challenge, you will have the chance to climb the 463 steps to the top for the best views of the city.  With our local guides, you can skip the line to visit Michelangelo’s sculpture of David at the Accademia Gallery. The sculpture was created between 1501-1504 and stands 14 ft tall.  You will have free time to explore the city and do some shopping. In the evening, we will travel by high-speed train to Rome

Day 5 – ROME Vatican Tour (including Sistine Chapel & St Peter’s Basilica) with our local Roman guides, Castel Sant’Angelo. You will have the option to take a walking food tour in the evening to take in some of the beautiful sights and tastes of Rome at night.  We will see the famous Trevi Fountain and toss a coin over our shoulders into the fountain (with the hopes that someday we may again return to Rome).  We will also visit the best, most well-preserved structure in Rome that is still in operation – the Pantheon.  We will finish the night at Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Domitian in 1st century AD, it still follows the form of the open space of the stadium.   [Hotel:  Rome]

DAY 6 – ROME – Colosseum Tour with local Roman guides, free time to explore more of Rome [Hotel: Rome]

DAY 7 – ROME-AMALFIThe Rome-Naples high-speed train (speeds of around 200 mph) will get you to Naples in half the time if you were to drive.  Once we arrive in Naples, we will take a chartered bus to the Ruins of  Pompeii (passing right by Mount Vesuvius on the way).  Our special local Italian guide will explain to you what happened on that fateful day in 79 AD.  There are hidden gems throughout the city – you will learn about the architecture of Pompeii in detail and understand why the Romans built it the way they did.  We will continue over the beautiful hills of the Riserva Statale Valle delle Ferriere, then drop down into the Amalfi Coast with breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. [Hotel: Amalfi]

Day 8 – AMALFI-SORRENTO – Today we will explore the magnificent Amalfi coast.  We will visit two villas, Ravello and Cimbrone, high up in the hills with amazing views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.  You will have the option (weather permitting) to take a hike along the Path of the Gods.  Sentiero degli Dei, as they say in Italy, is an ancient trail hugging the coastline which connects the villages of Agerola and Nocelle.  Take in the beautiful views of the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri, and enjoy a picnic along the way.  We will end our day in Positano for dinner, take some photos at the beach, do some shopping, then spend the night in Sorrento. [Hotel:  Sorrento]

Day 9 – CAPRI – Capri Day Tour (OPTIONAL)A highlight for many of our guests –  this day is packed full of surprises.  We start the day by taking the ferry from Sorrento to Positano (around 30 minutes).  Once we arrive, we will head to the famous Blue Grotto (weather permitting).  The Blue Grotto is a natural sea cave 200 feet long by 80 feet wide and has been known since ancient Roman times. It was first used as Emperor Tiberius’ personal swimming hole.

The mouth of the cave entrance is around 6 feet wide and 3 feet high, so visitors must enter with small rowboats seating 2-4 people each.  Once inside, you will see that the water is illuminated with a turquoise glow from the sunlight passing through an underwater cavity.

We will also have the chance to ride the Monte Solaro Chairlift.  This single-person chairlift will take you to the highest point of Capri – Mount Solaro (1932’).  You will have time at the top to explore the most panoramic views of the island.

At the end of the tour, you will have time to shop before we board the boat back to the mainland town of Sorrento.  You will have free time to have dinner at the amazing restaurants and enjoy the shopping this town has to offer.  [Hotel: Sorrento]
