We will start the day at Mirabell Gardens (beautiful gardens on the grounds of the Mirabell Palace). The Sound of Music Tour is optional but highly recommended even if you haven’t seen the movie. The tour takes you by bus to some of the movie sites and through the Austrian countryside. It is breathtaking!

In the afternoon you will also have an optional tour of Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest (used by the Nazis for social meetings, which is now a restaurant/tourist site), and the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines

Hotel:  Salzburg, Austria

Day 5 – SWITZERLAND-GERMANY

We will cover some ground today, making our way from Salzburg, Austria to Lucerne, Switzerland by bus. We will make a stop to tour Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”. There is a guided tour at the castle, a waterfall, and a spectacular view of the Bavarian countryside.

Hotel: Lucerne, Switzerland

Day 6 – SWITZERLAND

Lucerne has many options for sightseeing. You can visit Mt. Pilatus or take a Lake Lucerne Cruise. The famous Kapellbrucke or Chapel Bridge dates back to the 1200s. You can walk across the bridge (decorated with paintings from Switzerland’s history) and take in the beauty of this city.

After our morning in Lucerne, we will travel by bus to the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley. Lauterbrunnen is a town situated at the foot of the Swiss Alps and is a favorite for many of our guests. Such a favorite, that we will be staying 2 nights here on this tour.

Hotel: Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Day 7 – SWITZERLAND

The Swiss Alps could be a tour all on its own. There are a few highlights that you won’t want to miss. Jungfrau (Top of Europe) is Europe’s highest railway. Take a train to the top of the Alps, where you can visit the observatory, walk through ice caves, and even pick out your favorite Swiss chocolates at the Lindt store. We will also visit the picturesque Grindelwald Town. Another option is Schilthorn, a gondola that will take you up to the top of the peak with spectacular views at 9744 feet! Also a film location for the 1969 James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Another stop on the gondola ride is Murren, a small village perched on the top of a 3,000-foot cliff.

Hotel: Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Day 8 – ITALY-SWITZERLAND

We depart Lauterbrunnen, but continue our journey through the Swiss Alps. First stop – Oeschinensee. The aqua-blue color of this alpine lake will take your breath away. It is a short gondola ride up to the lake, then around a 20-minute hike. You will also have the chance to ride the alpine coaster, which is also up on top of the mountain.

We will spend the afternoon traveling to the Swiss town of Zermatt. This town is tucked far into the Swiss/Italian Alps and has the best views of the Matterhorn mountain.

Hotel: Zermatt, Switzerland

Day 9 – ITALY

Departing Zermatt, we will spend the day traveling through the Swiss and Italian Alps and then dip down into Northern Italy. We will make a stop at Lago Maggiore and Baveno, making our way to Lake Como.  You will have the option of taking a boat tour on Lake Como with a stop at the real Bellagio.

Hotel: Como, Italy

Day 10 – ITALY

Lake Como is only around an hour from Milan (2nd largest city in Italy). We will take a stop here and visit the Milan Cathedral and visit the shops and restaurants of the Piazza del Duomo. From here, it is a high-speed rail to our final destination – Rome. When we arrive in Rome, we will do an evening walking tour to see Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain to help you get your bearings…oh, and we won’t forget the stop for gelato!

Hotel: Rome, Italy

Day 11 – ITALY

Today is free time however you choose. If you haven’t been to Rome before, we highly recommend the tour of the Colosseum and the Vatican (including St. Peter’s Basilica). You also have the option of extending a day or two in Rome to explore more.

Hotel: Rome, Italy
